Experiments:FNAL-E-0973, SLAC-PEP2-BABAR
Deadline: 2015-09-01
Region: North America

Job description:
The Caltech experimental high energy physics group is seeking highly qualified candidates for
Postdoctoral Scholar positions associated with the quark and lepton flavor group. There are two
principal activities of this group: The Mu2e experiment at Fermilab and the BABAR experiment at PEP-II.

Mu2e is designed to search for muon to electron lepton-flavor transitions in the conversion
of muons to electrons in the field of a nucleus, with a sensitivity four orders of magnitude better than the current limit. Observation of such conversions would be an unambiguous observation of charged lepton flavor violation, i.e., new physics. Mu2e has recently received CD-2 approval from the DOE. The Caltech group brings its expertise on calorimetry to bear on this experiment, where a crystal calorimeter based on BaF2 is planned.

The large BABAR dataset will continue to be the basis of forefront studies of B, charm, and tau physics
for several years. Our group has most recently been pursuing analyses of CP violation, rare B meson
decays, and searches for dark force carriers.

This position is available now. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in high energy physics and demonstrated
strong potential for outstanding achievement as an independent researcher. Experience with HEP software
development, object-oriented analysis and design, and detector hardware will be advantageous.
Exceptionally qualified candidates with previous postdoctoral experience may be appointed at the Senior
Postdoctoral Scholar level.

Interested applicants should send a curriculum vitae, list of publications, and a description of research
interests and skills; and arrange for three letters of reference to be sent to either Professor David Hitlin
(email: hitlin@hep.caltech.edu) or to Professor Frank Porter (email: fcp@hep.caltech.edu), Physics
Department 356-48, Caltech, Pasadena, CA 91125.

We are an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, or national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
