The Solid Polarized Target group at the University of Virginia invites applications for a post-doctoral research associate position, to start in early 2018. Our group currently has three senior members, two post-doctoral research associates, and 3 graduate students.
We are the leading domestic University-based solid polarized target research group and actively pursue R&D in evaporation and dilution refrigerators, superconducting magnets, NMR systems and the dynamic nuclear polarization of target materials.
The successful candidate will join our efforts on the polarized Seaquest experiment (E1039) at Fermilab and at Jefferson Lab where we are have commitments in multiple halls. The ultimate aim of our program is to understand the structure of nucleons and nuclei. The associate will expected to travel for various, and possibly extended, periods to Jefferson Lab and Fermilab.
The successful applicant will acquire the skills needed to contribute to research with polarized targets and nuclear/particle spin-physics analysis as well as play a leading role in the preparation and data collection of one or more of our experiments. They will be expected to propose new experiments.
A Ph.D. in experimental or theoretical nuclear, particle, or high-energy physics (or closely related field) is required before the start date. Applicants must have good written and verbal communication skills as indicated by scientific publications in preeminent refereed journals, conference presentations, etc. and must possess a general knowledge of nuclear and particle physics.
Experience/expertise in one or more of the following areas is strongly desired: Physics of medium- or high-energy electron scattering; advanced statistical analysis techniques; previous analysis of asymmetry data; experience with high vacuum and cryogenics, polarization technologies, and scientific software development experience with one or more of the following: GEANT4, Fluka, C++, Python and LabView.
