Field of Interest:astro-ph, hep-ex
Experiments:AUGER, AUGERPRIME
Deadline: 2018-02-12
Region: Europe
Job description:
The Department of Elementary Particle Physics of Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) invites
applications for a postdoctoral position in high-energy astroparticle physics within the
Pierre Auger collaboration.
The Department is part of the Inter-University Institute for High Energies IIHE (ULB-VUB), which
combines the experimental particle and astroparticle research groups from both Brussels universities,
ULB and VUB, and presently numbers about 90 physicists, engineers and support staff. It is involved in
large international collaborations in astroparticle physics – IceCube (at the South Pole) and Auger (in
Argentina), and in particle physics – CMS (at the LHC), JUNO (in China) and Solid (in Belgium).
The Pierre Auger Observatory (www.auger.org) is the largest detector ever built to study ultra high
energy cosmic rays, covering 3000 km 2 in la Pampa, Argentina. After more than 10 years of successful
operation, a major upgrade of the Observatory is taking place. It will enhance the capabilities of the
surface detector to determine the nature of these particles. Together with the theoretical department of
ULB, involved in the Telescope Array experiment, we are aiming to combine available and future data of
both observatories, including the mass composition information, towards a full-sky cosmic rays analysis.
The candidate should have experience in data analysis and is expected to make a strong contribution in
the analysis of the data from the upgraded detector, AugerPrime. (S)he will join the final R&D phase,
during which the detectors will be installed in Argentina. The position also implies shifts and visits to the
Observatory. The salary is competitive and includes all social security benefits (information is available
upon request). Contributions to teaching are possible but are not required. The candidate should be
in the condition of international mobility 1 and should have a maximum of 5 years of experience after
her/his PhD.
The position will remain open until suitable candidates are found. Interested candidates are encouraged
to apply before February 12th, 2018, when a first application screening will take place. Applications
should be sent by email (with subject “UHECRs – post-doc position”) to Prof. Ioana C. Mariş via the
IIHE-ULB secretariat. They should include a detailed CV, a letter of motivation and the names of 3
referees.
