Deadline: 2015-11-30
Region: Europe

Job description:

The acceleration of charged particles by the fields of a laser has been suggested more than half a century ago, the first successful experiments have been performed only very recently. Funded by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, and in collaboration with the national research laboratories PSI, DESY, SLAC and four universities, we will embark on research on the direct acceleration of electrons by a laser beam inside a dielectric nanostructure. In this context we are looking for outstanding applications for our

MOORE Fellowship
For Laser Acceleration of Electrons
Your tasks
  • Layout the experiment
  • Design an interaction chamber
  • Design the laser beam transport, align and synchronize the laser with the electron beam
  • Lead the first proof-of-principle experiments in the SwissFEL beamline
  • Participate in experiments of our other collaboration partners
  • Communicate results to the Moore Foundation, to scientists and to other interested parties

Your profile
You hold a PhD in physics or related field. You have a solid understanding of accelerator physics, nanostructures and/or short pulse lasers. Ideally you have experience with advanced acceleration concepts. You have excellent communication skills working within our international collaboration, as well as with the local team of scientists, engineers and technicians. You are willing to travel several times per year to meetings and experiments with our collaboration partners.

We offer
…an exciting topic in advanced accelerator concepts, at the intersection of laser and accelerator physics. While working within our international collaboration, your home base will be at Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) in Villigen, close to the future accelerator SwissFEL. This is a two-year research associate position, with the possibility of an extension to a third year. EPFL supports your ambitions to grow and offers a program to support your personal development.

More information can be obtained from Dr. Rasmus Ischebeck, email rasmus.ischebeck@psi.ch, phone +41563105535 or Prof. Dr. Leonid Rivkin, email leonid.rivkin@epfl.ch, phone +41563103214.

Please send your application, including motivation letter, CV, list of publications, and contact addresses of references, by e-mail to erika.luthi@epfl.ch. In addition, you should arrange for three letters of reference to reach the same address. All complete applications received before or on November 30, 2015, will be considered.
