Research Assistant / Associate - protoDUNE & DUNE (Fixed Term) - Postdoc at Cambridge U.

The High-Energy Physics group in the Department of Physics has a vacancy for a Research Assistant / Associate to join our team developing state-of-the-art neutrino reconstruction software for Liquid Argon Time Projection Chambers, and specifically the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment. This is an exciting opportunity to make important contributions to the development of automatic reconstruction software, which is at the heart of the future neutrino programme at Fermilab.

On appointment, the successful candidate will work on: i) refinements to the Pandora reconstruction framework; and ii) the development of reconstruction algorithms and application to the physics analysis of data from the protoDUNE and DUNE experiment. The successful candidate will work with the Cambridge Neutrino group and, in particular, the Pandora team lead by Professor Thomson and Dr Marshall. The development work will be undertaken in close collaboration with physicists from UK Universities and US research institutes.

The successful candidate will have a strong background in software development. Direct experience with the development of reconstruction software for particle physics is highly desirable. The candidate will have a PhD in physics or a related computational discipline (or the doctoral thesis is soon to be submitted). The ability to work both as part of a team, and independently, coupled with excellent communication, organisational and problem solving skills are required.

The duties/responsibilities of this post include developing and driving research objectives, writing up work for presentation and publication, collaborating with industrial partners, assisting in the supervision of student research projects, and delivering seminars and occasional talks as outlined on the Further Information Document attached.

Where the successful applicant does not yet have a PhD, he/she will normally be under-appointed as a Research Assistant in a Research Associate post (on the understanding that he/she will be appointed as a Research Associate upon successful completion of his/her PhD). The higher Research Associate salary will be backdated to the submission date of their thesis.
