Job description:

Research Associate in ATLAS, Ref:1606784

UCL Department of Physics and Astronomy

Full time, Salary Grade 7 (£34,056 - £41,163 per annum, inclusive of London allowance)

Closing Date: 10 Dec 2016

The UCL High Energy Physics group is looking for one outstanding PhD particle physicist to take up a leading role in physics analysis with the ATLAS data and to make significant technical contributions to the ATLAS experiment project. Our physics interests centre on investigating further the mechanism of electroweak symmetry breaking, including studies of the newly discovered Higgs boson and vector boson scattering, searching for physics beyond the Standard Model as well as key Standard Model measurements.

The UCL HEP group consists of around 80 staff and students, and provides an exciting and supportive research environment with involvement in particle phenomenology, neutrino experiments, direct Dark Matter searches, Particle Astrophysics, lepton sector experiments and accelerator R&D. The main purpose of the role is to participate in ATLAS data analysis and a technical activity within ATLAS.

The focus of this role will be to undertake searches for new physics, as well as measurements of relevant Standard Model processes and exploiting the overlap between the two. The technical responsibilities will involve the development and validation of Monte Carlo generators. The post holder is expected to undertake regular travel to CERN. This position is funded by STFC for 2 years initially.

The successful applicant will have or be about to obtain a PhD in Particle Physics and expertise in data analysis. Candidates should also have excellent written and verbal communication. Knowledge of C++ and Python and involvement in technical work in a HEP experiment is desirable. The appointment is at Grade 7 (£34,056 - £41,163 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance), dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be at research assistant Grade 6B (£29,809 - £31,432 per annum) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis

Candidates will be required to submit a CV, statement of research interest and a list of publications, and a minimum of 3 references. A job description and person specification, as well as instructions on how to apply and information on UCL Terms and Conditions and benefits can be accessed here:

Interviews will be held shortly after the closing date. Informal enquiries regarding the vacancy should be directed to Dr Gavin Hesketh, gavin.hesketh@ucl.ac.uk (Tel: +44 (0)207 679 2739). Any queries regarding the application process should be directed to Khadija Bouzgan k.bouzgan@ucl.ac.uk  (+44 (0)207 679 3943)

Our departmen holds an Athena SWAN Silver award, in recognition of our commitment and success in addressing gender equality. This appointment is subject to UCL Terms and Conditions of Service for Research and Support Staff.
