Job description:

We invite applications for an academic research position at the rank of Postdoctoral Scholar in the area of experimental astroparticle physics, in the Kavli Institute for Cosmological Physics (KICP) at The University of Chicago.  Applicants are required to have attained the degree of Ph.D., or must expect to finish a degree program no later than Winter of 2017, in the area of physics, astrophysics, or a related field. Three letters of reference from faculty members or senior research scientists who are active in the field of study in question will also be required to complete the application.

We seek an outstanding, highly motivated candidate with interest both in analysis and hardware. The appointee will participate in the XENON1T program, a direct dark matter search using two-phase xenon technology. XENON1T has been recently deployed at the Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory (LNGS) in Italy. The appointee will contribute to the XENON1T operations, calibration and data analysis and will be involved in hardware projects for the planned upgrade to XENONnT. The appointee will also be asked to contribute to R&D activities and auxiliary measurements, designed to test new ideas for next generation detectors as well as inform analyses of presently running dark matter searches (see grandilab.uchicago.edu). The postdoctoral position will be based at Chicago within the unique context of Kavli Institute for Cosmological Physics.

Previous experience with noble liquid detectors, direct dark matter search experiments, low-background techniques, data analysis (ROOT) and Monte Carlo simulations (GEANT4) will be advantageous.

The initial appointment is for one year, renewable annually, for up to three years. Please note that the position of Postdoctoral Scholar is open only to those individuals with less than seven years since the attainment of their Ph.D. degree. Priority will be given to those who received their Ph.D. in 2013 or later. There are no teaching responsibilities with this position.

Applicants should provide a brief statement of research interests and a curriculum vitae with a list of publications and preprints. Applications should be sent to Luca Grandi, Assistant Professor at The University of Chicago and KICP, via the email address xenon1t_search@uchicago.edu. Only electronic applications will be accepted. The applicants should also arrange to have their recommendation letters sent directly from their referees to Professor Grandi via the same email address, with the applicant's name in the subject line. Completed applications should be submitted by October 15th, 2016. Earlier submissions will be given priority consideration. Only those candidates selected for an interview will be contacted. The position will remain open until filled.

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, protected veteran status or status as an individual with disability. The University of Chicago is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity/Disabled/Veterans Employer. It also participates in the Exchange Visitor Program and will facilitate the granting of visas to international applicants.
