Experiments:FNAL-E-0929, ANNIE, DUNE
Deadline: 2016-08-15
Region: North America
Job description:
The Experimental Neutrino Physics Group at Iowa State University invites applications for a postdoctoral research position. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to participate in current and upcoming neutrino experiments: NOvA, ANNIE and DUNE.
The neutrino group at ISU plays a leading role in the NOvA experiment. This long-baseline experiment seeks to make key measurements in neutrino physics, such as the neutrino mass hierarchy. These results are highly anticipated worldwide. NOvA is currently taking data and there are great opportunities for postdoctoral researchers to assume leadership roles in the data analysis and operations.
The ISU group is also involved in DUNE, the next generation long-baseline experiment that will seek to disentangle the mass hierarchy and CP violation. DUNE design plans call for the World’s largest liquid argon detector, making it a cutting-edge facility for neutrino science. A postdoctoral researcher in the group will have a chance to play a major role in the design of this experiment which could transform our understanding of the origins of the Universe.
The ISU group is a leading institution on the Accelerator Neutrino Neutron Interaction Experiment (ANNIE). This experiment is an advanced R&D detector designed to measure the neutron yield of GeV-scale neutrino interactions in gadolinium-doped water. To accomplish this measurement, ANNIE will rely on newly developed Large Area Picosecond Photodetectors (LAPPDs) and the development of novel experimental techniques. The first phase of this experiment has been installed over the past year and it is taking data. ANNIE Phase II is a unique opportunity for ambitious postdoctoral researchers to see an experiment through all its full cycle: construction, operations, and data analysis.
We are seeking two Ph.D. in experimental high energy physics with the skills to work in both data analysis and detector development. Applicants should send curriculum vitae, a description of research interests and arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent to Prof. Mayly Sanchez (mayly.sanchez@iastate.edu). Review of applications will begin August 15, 2016 and continue until the position is filled.
Iowa State University is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, age, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, genetic information, national origin, marital status, disability, or protected veteran status, and will not be discriminated against.
