Field of Interest:astro-ph, hep-ex, physics.ins-det
Experiments:SUPER-CDMS-SNOLAB
Deadline: 2016-07-31
Region: North America
Job description:
POSTDOCTORAL ASSOCIATE, DARK MATTER AND NEUTRINO PHYSICS: Located at Northwestern University, to join the group of Professor Enectali Figueroa-Feliciano. The SuperCDMS (cryogenic dark matter search) experiment is building a second-generation experiment to search for dark matter in the form of weakly interacting particles or WIMPs. SuperCDMS SNOLAB will use new germanium and silicon detectors with unprecedented sensitivity to low-mass WIMPs. The Northwestern group is collaborating closely with Fermilab and will play a leadership role in the assembly and testing of the cryogenic and shield system at Fermilab before taking the experiment down to SNOLAB. We are also planing a separate experiment to measure the ionization yield in germanium and silicon down to very low nuclear recoil energies. In addition, we are establishing the Northwestern Experimental Underground Site at Fermilab (NEXUS@FNAL), a new facility consisting of a dilution refrigerator located 100m underground in the NuMI tunnel for detector characterization and prototyping. Finally, we are involved in the design of next-generation dark matter detectors and adapting dark matter detector technology to search for new physics in the neutrino sector.
