Job description:
The IceCube and CTA group of the Department of Particle Physics has two openings for                       
                                                            PostDoctoral Assistant
 
of one, renewable to two years, to pursue postdoctoral research in Astroparticle Physics and Photosensors. Preferred start dates are between June and September 2016.
Candidates must have a PhD degree in Physics/Engineering with a specialization in Particle Physics or Particle Detectors by the hiring time.
They will work in a group composed of Prof. Teresa Montaruli, Maître d’Enseignement et de Recherche Dr. D. della Volpe, additional two postdocs and three PhD students and a full time electronics engineer. The University of Geneva offers the unique opportunity for postdocs to work in a very international environment. Plenty of seminars are held every week at the University and at the close-by CERN International laboratory. Moreover, the group has equipped laboratories at CERN, including one at the innovation section of IdeaSquare, and at the Department with instruments dedicated to semiconductor photosensor tests and operations. The Département de Physique Nucleaire et Corpusculaire has two electronics and a mechanics workshops equipped with clean chamber, bonding machines, climatic chambers.
The Postdocs will become members of the CTA Consortium and will contribute to the completion of the first prototype of small size telescope equipped with a single 4 m diameter mirror and a SiPM camera. He/she will help to put it into data acquisition while starting the construction of other ones. Once the telescope will be put into acquisition, data analysis has to start.
Particularly, one of the two postdocs will be hired on an EC grant (FET-OPEN EXCHANGE) on the roadmap for the ultimate development of a low light-level sensor. In this project the Postdoc will assume leadership roles in setting up contacts between industrial and research partners, he/she will develop outreach tools adequate at divulgating photo-sensing techniques and will set up testing facilities. He/she will work in close contacts with companies such as Philips and Hamamatsu studying and developing new concepts of photosensors and will organize workshops.
The Postdocs shall have adequate computing skills and may also work for part of the time on IceCube data analysis. Female candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.
