Deadline: 2016-03-07
Region: Europe
Job description:
The ESRF is a multinational research institute, situated in Grenoble, France and financed by 21 countries, mostly European. It operates a powerful synchrotron X-ray source with some 30 beamlines (instruments) covering a wide range of scientific research in fields such as biology and medicine, chemistry, earth and environmental sciences, materials and surface science, and physics. The ESRF employs about 600 staff and is organized as a French société civile.
Within the Experiments Division, the Matter at Extremes Group is now seeking to recruit a:
Post-Doctoral Fellow on ID06
THE FUNCTION
You will work on 3D reconstructions of the microstructure evolution during hot processing of various steel grades using in-situ x-ray microscopy. During steel processing and namely during hot rolling and thermal treatments, numerous and sometimes competing phenomena occur: recovery, recrystallization, phase transformations (austenite to ferrite, bainite or martensite), grain growth, second-phase precipitation, etc.
A dedicated and optimized hard x-ray microscope is being implemented at the ESRF beamline ID06. Uniquely, the new methodology enables in-situ 3D mapping of domains, phases and stresses within thick polycrystalline specimens - at the 100 nm scale. Your tasks will include the participation in the design, construction and commissioning of a device for heating and cooling samples in a non-oxidizing environment. You will test the system by studying slow phenomena such as annealing or recrystallization, and process the obtained data to evaluate the quality of the extracted information.
This work will be conducted in close collaboration with OCAS (Onderzoeks Centrum voor de Aanwending van Staal), in Belgium, which is an advanced, market-oriented research centre providing steel and metal-based products, services and solutions, to metal processing companies worldwide.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
You must hold a Ph.D. degree in physics, mechanics, materials science, geoscience or a related field. Very good skills in instrumentation (e.g. X-ray instrumentation, sample environments) are essential. You should have a keen interest in experimental work. Basic knowledge in metallurgy is an advantage. Good organisation and communication skills are required, as well as the ability to work independently and to contribute to a large, dynamic environment.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The working language of the ESRF is English. Further information about the post can be obtained from Carsten Detlefs (detlefs@esrf.fr) and Roger Hubert (roger.hubert@ocas.be). For further information on employment terms and conditions, please refer to http://www.esrf.fr/Jobs/Conditions. The ESRF is an equal opportunity employer and encourages applications from disabled persons.
Contract of 18 months, renewable for a further 6-month period. Only candidates holding a Ph.D. obtained less than 3 years ago are eligible for postdoctoral positions.
The annual gross salary will be 41,8 k€, plus possible additional allowances according to status.
If you are interested in this position, please apply on-line at this address: http://www.esrf.fr/Jobs.
Ref. 2332 - Deadline for returning application forms: 7 March 2016
