Deadline: 2016-02-07
Region: Europe
Job description:
The ESRF is a multinational research institute, situated in Grenoble, France and financed by 21 countries mostly European. It operates a powerful synchrotron X-ray source with some 30 beamlines (instruments) covering a wide range of scientific research in fields such as biology and medicine, chemistry, earth and environmental sciences, materials and surface science, and physics. The ESRF employs about 600 staff and is organized as a French société civile.
Within the Experiments Division, the Structure of Materials group is now seeking to recruit a:
Post-Doctoral Fellow
for the European Network VitriMetTech
FUNCTION
The European network VitriMetTech (http://www.vitrimettech.unito.it/) comprises12 research institutions from around Europe working together to produce and characterize bulk metallic glasses with mechanical and magnetic properties optimized for diverse applications in the energy and medical sectors. The ESRF participates in this network as a major contributor to structural characterization of the newly synthesised materials.
You will exploit the novel opportunities available at the newly refurbished ID15A beamline, devoted to materials chemistry and engineering, to characterize short and long range structural aspects of these materials as a function of mechanical and thermal conditions. You will interact with both local scientists and partners from the pan-European network, presenting an excellent opportunity to exploit the wide range of expertise and experimental techniques available across the network. At the ESRF, you will primarily perform experiments for the characterization of the atomic level structure, principally via pair-distribution function analysis, with tomographic techniques used to explore macroscopically heterogeneous materials at the micron level. Within the network, you will have the opportunity to be seconded to partner institutions, in order to gain experience with a wide variety of experimental techniques useful in the production, optimization and characterization of bulk metallic glasses, and to develop your own collaboration network throughout Europe.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
You should hold a PhD in chemistry, physics, engineering, or a closely related field. A strong background in X-ray diffraction and/or imaging techniques is desirable.
OUR OFFER
The working language of the ESRF is English. Further information on the post can be obtained from Gavin Vaughan (tel.: +33 (0)4 76 88 23 41, email: vaughan@esrf.fr). For further information on employment terms and conditions, please refer to http://www.esrf.fr/Jobs/Conditions. The ESRF is an equal opportunity employer and encourages applications from disabled persons.
Contract of 18 months. Only candidates holding a Ph.D. obtained less than 3 years ago are eligible for Post-doctoral positions.
The annual gross salary will be 41,8 K€, plus possible additional allowances according to status.
If you are interested in this position, please apply on-line at this address: http://www.esrf.fr/Jobs.
