Job description:
FEL SEEDING
DESY, Hamburg location, is seeking:
Postdoc (f/m) on ”Laser FEL seeding”

DESY

DESY is one of the world’s leading research centres for photon science, particle and astroparticle physics as well as accelerator physics. DESY’s laser science and technology group is responsible for research, development and operations of high power femtosecond and picosecond lasers related to particle accelerators and free electron lasers (FEL). We are currently conducting research on laser-based seeding methods with the aim to improve the spectral and temporal characteristics of the extreme ultraviolet (XUV) and soft X-ray pulses produced by DESY’s FLASH FEL. In the near future we will implement those seeding schemes also to the FLASH2 highrepetition rate beamlines and are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral scientist (f/m) to lead all laser-related aspects of this project and contribute to the ongoing research.

The position
-Research in laser-based FEL seeding methods
-Specify and design laser system, laser transport and frequency conversion stages for seeding the FLASH2 FEL beamline
-Coordinate development and implementation of laser beam diagnostics and control software for reliable 24/7 laser operation
-Collaborate with accelerator scientists in all R&D projects

Requirements
-PhD degree in Photonics, Physics, Laser engineering, or similar discipline
-Excellent knowledge and hands-on experience with femtosecond lasers and nonlinear optics
-Knowledge of project planning, OPCPA technology, vacuum technology, electronics and computer control is beneficial
-Knowledge of accelerator physics or the ability to acquire quickly the relevant knowledge
-Ability to perform self-driven research, co-ordinate experiments and inspire the research of co-workers.
-Ability to communicate effectively and to present results both orally and in writing in a multi-lingual, multi-disciplinary research environment

For further information please contact Dr. Ingmar Hartl ingmar.hartl@desy.de.

The position is limited to 2 years.
