Job description:
The School of Physics and Astronomy in the University is seeking to appoint an outstanding individual to a Lectureship or Readership in Particle Cosmology [Lecturer and Reader are both permanent faculty positions in the UK system, Lecturer at a similar level to Assistant Professor, Reader at a similar level to Associate Professor].

The aim of particle cosmology is to understand the early universe and resolve the nature of the “dark universe” – dark energy and dark matter. It is a subject that involves close collaboration between particle physics theory and cosmology. With this post the School seeks to extend its expertise in the development of particle physics models of cosmic inflation, linking the Particle Physics Group and Cosmology Group of the Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics (JBCA).

The School has 80 academic staff delivering education to undergraduate and postgraduate students in Physics and Astronomy. Research is based in four divisions: Condensed Matter, Atomic and Biological Physics; Accelerator, Nuclear and Particle Physics; Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics; Theoretical Physics. The 2010 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Prof. Andre Geim and Prof. Konstantin Novoselov for their work on graphene. The School has extensive laboratories and computing facilities. The School operates the Jodrell Bank Observatory in Cheshire. Academics work in collaboration with physicists and astronomers worldwide and participate in experiments at international laboratories such as CERN.

You will be a theoretical physicist of international standing with an active interest in Particle Cosmology.  You will work closely with theoreticians in the Particle Physics Group led by Professor Michael Seymour and the JBCA Cosmology Group headed by Professor Richard Battye.

You will be appointed to a lectureship or readership dependent on experience and international reputation.

The School of Physics and Astronomy is committed to promoting equality and diversity, including the Athena SWAN charter for promoting women’s careers in STEMM subjects (science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine) in higher education. The School received a Bronze Award in 2013 for their commitment to the representation of women in the workplace and we particularly welcome applications from women for this post. Appointment will always be made on merit. For further information, please visit http://www.physics.manchester.ac.uk/about-us/equality-and-diversity/.
