ATLAS Muon System Upgrade
Applications are invited for a postdoctoral fellow/research associate position in the
Experimental High Energy Physics group of the University of Freiburg. The group has an
active program of participation in the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. The
group is one of those responsible for the maintenance and running of the ATLAS Muon
System and is heavily involved in the Muon New Small Wheel upgrade which is targeted to
be installed in 2019/20. The group is seeking to increase its involvement in the ATLAS
phase II upgrade program. In addition we have an active program of ATLAS physics
analysis, particularly in the areas of Standard Model processes and SUSY searches.
We are looking for a candidate who will establish and lead the phase-2 upgrade related
activities in our group. For the Muon Phase-2 upgrade the Initial Design Review will be in
the first half of 2016. The Technical Design Report will be due at the end of 2017 and it is
expected that the successful candidate contributes to both.
His or her precise duties will be defined during the hiring process, taking into account also
the interests and areas of expertise of the candidate. Interest and experience in detector
physics, particularly gaseous detectors, and familiarity with Linux, C++ and similar
software tools is expected. Experience in electronics design and/or FPGA programming
would be an asset, as would familiarity with HEP simulations tools like GEANT4. Besides
the work for phase-2 it is expected that the successful candidate contributes in the
preparation for the ATLAS NSW, in particular at the beginning of his/her appointment.
The duration of the position is initially limited until June 2018 with the possibility of
extension, subject to continued funding. Candidates should supply a resume, a description
of research interests and three letters of reference to Prof. Gregor Herten, herten@uni-
freiburg.de. For information about the position send an email to herten@uni-freiburg.de or
stephanie.zimmermann@physik.uni-freiburg.de or ulrich.landgraf@physik.uni-freiburg.de.
The University of Freiburg aims at increasing the percentage of women in academic
positions and strongly encourages female scientists to apply. The University is an equal
opportunity employer and particularly welcomes applications of persons with disabilities.
The review of the applications will start 1st September 2015, but applications will be
accepted until the position is filled.
