ICTS-SIMONS FELLOWSHIPS AND POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS IN STRING THEORY
The International Centre for Theoretical Sciences is a new initiative of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in Bangalore, to foster excellence in fundamental research and interdisciplinary collaborations in theoretical fields. Further information is available at the ICTS website: http://www.icts.res.in
We are looking for highly motivated candidates for postdoctoral positions, starting in the 2016-17 academic year. Initial appointments will be for a two year period, with an extension to a third year after an academic review.
ICTS has one of the largest string theory groups in India. The faculty comprises Pallab Basu, Avinash Dhar, R. Loganayagam, Rajesh Gopakumar, Suvrat Raju and Spenta Wadia. ICTS is also strong in allied fields like astrophysical relativity, and its other faculty represent diverse theoretical interests including statistical mechanics, fluid dynamics, and theoretical biology.
International programs, including the Chandrasekhar, Ramanujan and Turing lecture series are frequently organized at ICTS, bring in a flux of outstanding scientists and offer broad intellectual stimulation.
ICTS has recently moved to its new campus in Bangalore, but we continue to interact closely and have regular joint meetings with the Centre for High Energy Physics at the Indian Institute of Science. The latter also has several string theorists including Justin David, Chethan Krishnan and Aninda Sinha.
Three kinds of positions are offered:
ICTS-Simons Fellow (3 years): This is a prestigious postdoctoral fellowship with a monthly salary of Rs. 60,000 per month in addition to free on-campus accommodation and other subsidized living arrangements. Simons Fellows can also avail of a large annual contingency grant for travel and research amounting to Rs. 200,000 per year.
Applicants for a Simons fellowship are automatically considered for the regular postdoctoral fellowships below.
Post Doctoral Fellow (3 years): Emoluments range from Rs 21,000-24,000 plus medical benefits and institutional housing (optionally candidates may choose to receive 30% housing allowance per month), and a contingency grant of Rs 20,000 per annum.
Post Doctoral Visiting Scientist (2 years): Emoluments range from Rs 35,000-43,000 plus medical benefits and institutional housing (optionally candidates may choose to receive 30% housing allowance per month). This position requires minimum 1 year of postdoctoral experience. Post doctoral fellows in scheme 1 can be considered for this position after a year.
Interested candidates should apply online at

Applicants should also arrange for (at least) two letters of recommendation to be sent directly to postdocapp@icts.res.in by 15 January 2016.
