Job description:

Our profile

The department of physics at RWTH Aachen University offers a vibrant community of particle physicists who play leading roles in the CMS experiment. We work on analysis of data, definition and refinement of physics objects, detector commissioning, operations, and design and development of the detector upgrade. There is close and frequent collaboration with the strong local theory community as well as with other local experimental groups. Through our CMS Tier-2/Tier-3 cluster there is access to outstanding computing resources. RWTH Aachen is one of Germany?s leading research universities.

We offer an excellent work environment in an experienced and highly motivated team, support in developing your own ideas and establishing a track record for future career development, and a reasonable travel budget to enable regular trips to CERN and to international conferences.

Your profile

The successful applicant will play a major role in measurements of the properties of the Higgs Boson. We are looking for junior and senior candidates with a Ph.D. in experimental particle physics and the potential to drive progress in physics analysis and development of reconstruction software. Senior candidates should have extensive experience in high-energy physics research, writing of publications, supervision of students, teaching and coordination of teams.

Your responsibilities

The successful candidate will play a leading role in measurements of the Higgs Boson couplings (ERC project HIGCC) with the CMS Experiment for the current data and in view of the future operation of LHC (High Luminosity LHC). The measurement of the Higgs-Charmquark coupling is a major challenge at the LHC. It represents one of the most difficult measurements in particle physics research. Senior candidates will be responsible to perform this measurement and to develop the necessary methodology and ingredients.

What we offer

The successful candidate will be employed as a public servant.
The position is to be filled as soon as possible and for 3 years with the option of extensions.
This is a full-time position.
Applicants must have a doctorate/Ph.D. or equivalent.
The salary corresponds to level E13 TV-L. For senior candidates working on the particularly difficult measurement of the Higgs-charm coupling the position can be awarded with a salary of level E14 TV-L. Candidates with extensive research and teaching experience will have the opportunity to acquire a so-called "habilitation".

RWTH Aachen University is certified as a Family-Friendly University.
We particularly welcome and encourage applications from women, disabled persons and ethnic minority groups, recognizing they are underrepresented across RWTH Aachen University.
The principles of fair and open competition apply and appointments will be made on merit.
