Job description:
The University of Zurich Physics Institute invites students with a masters degree in physics to apply for PhD student positions in Experimental Particle Physics on the DAMIC Experiment.
The University of Zurich has experimental particle physics groups on the DAMIC, CONNIE, XENON, DARWIN, GERDA, SHIP, CTA, CMS, and LHCb experiments, as well as theoretical groups studying standard model processes and potential BSM extensions.
The successful candidate will be a member of the DAMIC (Dark Matter in CCDs) collaboration. The DAMIC detector operates with an exceptionally low-energy threshold, capable of detecting coherent interactions of low-mass dark matter and neutrinos. DAMIC is currently in operation at SNOLAB, has produced world-leading experimental bounds on low-mass dark matter, and is developing an internationally competitive, large-scale experiment in the Modane Underground Laboratory in France.
Our DAMIC group has been engaged in activities such as project construction, simulation, calibrations, and data analysis since the first phase of DAMIC in 2008. The PhD candidate can expect a broad particle physics education, and will produce a PhD dissertation based on a combination of data analysis from the current experiment, along with contributions to the upgraded experiment. Experience with particle detectors, computer programming, and data analysis will be beneficial to the applicant during the selection process.
A masters degree in physics and a knowledge of particle and/or nuclear physics are required. Applicants can have citizenship from any country. A proficiency in english is required. PhD positions are fully funded according to Swiss salary requirements, and typically last 3-4 years.
