Job description:
The Neutrino Physics and Particle Astrophysics Group at Boston University is seeking a postdoctoral associate in Experimental Particle Physics.
The successful candidate will work with the
Super-Kamiokande collaboration and (optionally) the T2K collaboration. Our physics effort with Super-Kamiokande concentrates on the search for proton decay, the study of neutrino oscillation using atmospheric neutrinos, and indirect detection of dark matter. Our physics interest with T2K is to determine the neutrino mixing parameters related to muon neutrino disappearance and electron neutrino appearance, including mass hierarchy and CP-violation. Our detector contribution to the Super-Kamiokande experiment is to support the operation of the outer veto detector, particularly the electronics.

The most important near-term effort will be to help refurbish and recommission the Super-Kamiokande detector for the upcoming SK-Gd phase of the experiment. In 2018 we will drain the detector of water, make modifications and repairs, and restore the detector with a new water filtration system capable of purifying water doped with gadolinium sulfate. We plan on adding gadolinium to increase the capability of Super-K to detect neutrons coincident with neutrino interactions. This will open up a range of performance improvements. Neutron tagging will enhance the measurement of supernova neutrinos; help differentiate neutrinos from antineutrinos in both the natural atmospheric flux as well as the T2K beam; and reduce the background to proton decay from atmospheric neutrino interactions. The successful candidate will be welcome to contribute to the physics program of this new phase of Super-Kamiokande.

The candidate should have a recent Ph.D. in experimental particle physics. Expertise in detector simulation and electronic instrumentation of detectors will be advantageous. The position will be based in Boston, but significant travel to Japan should be anticipated.
