Job description:
SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is seeking a Research Associate for a joint appointment between the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) and the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource (SSRL).
The successful candidate will play a lead role in designing and developing high-throughput high-resolution tender (2 to 5 keV) X-ray photon-out spectroscopy instrumentation. Exploit the synergies between SLAC’s two X-ray sources to develop tender X-ray spectroscopy capabilities and apply them to static, operando and time-resolved studies at SSRL and LCLS. Research interest in synchrotron and free electron laser x-ray techniques focused on tender x-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) is required. The candidate will also have the opportunity to engage in and drive scientific research in the area of transition metal dichalcogenides, operando catalysis, and time-resolved photochemistry. The dissemination of scientific outcomes through peer reviewed publications, as well as presentations at meetings/conferences, is expected.

Responsibilities:•Support the development and operation of SSRL/LCLS instrumentation by: •Performing research and development to expand the capabilities of LCLS and SSRL. •Participating in planning and performing forefront experiments in the area of transition metal dichalcogenides, operando catalysis, and time-resolved ultrafast X-ray science using the SSRL and LCLS. •Collaborating with other scientists, postdocs, students, engineers and technical staff to execute experiments. •Disseminating research results through peer reviewed publications and presentations at scientific meetings and conferences.
Qualifications: •Ph.D. in Physics, Applied Physics, Chemistry, or related field and some experience in spectroscopy. Strong background in synchrotron radiation techniques and instrumentation, with emphasis in hard or tender X-ray photon-out spectroscopy (XES, XRS, RIXS and XAS). •Develop, design and test new scientific instrumentation. •Record of scientific productivity through publications. •Strong analytical, experimental and computational skills. •Effective written and verbal communication skills. •Ability to work and communicate effectively with a diverse population. •Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment.
