Description
The Fermilab Scientific Computing Division is looking for a scientist with a strong computing background to act as Deputy Department Head for the Data Movement and Storage Department.  This department is responsible for services that provide storage for scientific data, including disk, tape and tape backed disk. The department manages tens of petabytes of tape and disk for experiments and other scientific organizations that are sponsored by Fermilab.  The department has both storage operations and software development groups.

Essential Job Functions
Assist the department head in running the department and services, which include:
· Investigating new or alternative storage technologies for future needs
· Defining and managing the department and storage services budget
· Oversee procurement and deploying equipment
· Defining the tactical and strategic direction for the department
· Working with science customers on requirements and operations
· Oversight of department development and operations
· Managing the storage services within the ITIL framework for operations and managing department ITIL and ISO20000 processes and documentation
· Developing storage systems to evolve the storage services as a component of a High Energy Physics cloud
 
 
Qualifications
· Doctor of Philosophy in Physics (application physicist)
· 3-5 years experience in management of computing services and systems
· Strong background in computer hardware/architecture required
· Experience with service management in an ITIL environment highly desirable
· Experience in managing budgets highly desirable
· Experience working with science customers highly desirable
· Experience in Linux systems highly desirable
· Good oral and written communication skills required
