Job description:
Berkeley Lab’s National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center(NERSC) is inviting applications for the position for a NERSC Data Postdoctoral Scholars for High-Energy Physics to conduct applied research and development in the area of high-performance scientific computing (HPC) for experimental High-Energy Physics (HEP). The position is part of a larger effort to enable pathbreaking data-intensive science with NERSC's next generation manycore supercomputer, theCray KNL-based "Cori" system and also part of a cross-lab HEP center of computing excellencehttp://www.hepcce.org/.

You will enable critical computing for fundamental physics to be conducted on one of the world’s largest supercomputers, and so will gain experience of cutting edge computing hardware and systems, as well as ‘Big Data’ technologies and tools, operating at extreme-scales. You will be part of a multidisciplinary team of computational scientists and high-energy physicists, working to enable the use of energy-efficient, high-performance computing systems by the experimental high-energy physics community.

What You Will Do:

  • Specific activities could include

    • The optimization of data transfer over wide-area networks.

    • I/O benchmarking and enhancements capitalizing on NERSC’s recently acquired petabyte-sized NVRAM filesystem.

    • Scalable workflows and software deployment on HPC for HEP.

    • New applications of machine learning to HEP

    • Analysis and optimization of parallel applications for HEP.

  • Disseminate results of research activities through refereed publications and conference presentations and to ensure that new methods are suitably documented for the wider HEP community, NERSC staff, vendors, and other NERSC users.

  • May involve travel to sites at other labs and universities.

  • Experienced NERSC Big Data architects and LBL high-energy physicists will mentor the appointee.

  • Participation in postdoctoral career and science enrichment activities within the Berkeley Lab Computing Research and Physics Divisions will also be encouraged.

What Is Required:

  • Ph.D. in High-Energy Physics, Computational Science, Computer Science, Applied Math or an equivalent/related field.

  • Research experience and knowledge in computing and/or code development ideally for HEP or HPC is required.

  • Demonstrated understanding of high-energy physics.

  • Demonstrated strong communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work productively both independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team balancing divergent objectives involving research, code development, and optimization for next-generation HPC hardware and storage systems.

The posting shall remain open until the position is filled. For full consideration, please apply by close of business on January 31, 2018.
