Job description:
Applications are invited for a PhD position in particle physics (theory and phenomenology of beyond the Standard Model and Flavour Physics) at the University of Lyon. The position is for 3 years and will start on October 2018.
Applicants should hold a Master degree in physics, with strong background in quantum field theory and Standard Model. Further knowledge in flavour physics would be very welcome.
The work of the Ph.D. thesis will consist of studying in detail the implications of the deviations with the Standard Model predictions observed recently in the semileptonic B decays.
In fact, the New physics effects and new particles can be searched for indirectly through B decays (in particular if they are too heavy to be produced directly, or if they appear in complex configurations) as they can nevertheless appear in the virtual states and hence change the amplitudes and branching fractions of the processes.
In 2013, several deviations from the Standard Model predictions in the semileptonic decays where a b quark goes to an s quark have been measured. These deviations have been confirmed with more experimental data since then and new deviations have been observed. These results can constitute the first steps in the discovery of new physics.
