Job description:
Nikhef is the national institute for subatomic physics in The Netherlands. At Nikhef, approximately 175 physicists and 75 technical staff members perform excellent theoretical and experimental research in the fields of particle- and astroparticle physics. Nikhef participates in the ATLAS, LHCb and ALICE experiments at CERN, the VIRGO interferometer in Pisa, the XENON Dark Matter detector in Gran Sasso and the Pierre Auger cosmic rays observatory in Argentina, is a major contributor to the  KM3NeT neutrino telescope in the Mediterranean and through a ESR grant is part of the CHIPS long baseline neutrino experiment..

The CHIPS collaboration aims at producing a 10 kton water Cherenkov neutrino detector in the NuMi beamline. The design is unique in that the detector is placed in a water filled open cast mine pit. The overburden is 40 m of water. The design relies heavily on the KM3NeT readout design. The 10 kton detector is being built as a proof of concept, is aimed at drastic cost reduction in the field of long baseline neutrino physics and is expandable to at least 100 kton. The detector will be constructed and deployed in the spring and summer of 2018 and data taking will start in the fall.

Offer
The successful candidate will aid in the construction and deployment of the detector and be responsible, among other tasks, for setting up the data acquisition system. After construction is finished he/she will be expected to join the reconstruction and physics analysis team. The position is for 2 years with the possibility of a one-year extension.  A PhD in (astro-)particle physics or related field is required. Enthusiasm for joining a potentially breakthrough experiment is required.
The successful candidates will be employed by NWO. The position is based in Amsterdam. The first six to nine month the candidate will be posted in Minnesota, USA. You will receive a competitive salary. The conditions of employment are excellent and include extra months' salary payment in May and December and good travel facilities.
