Lecturer / Senior Lecturer / Reader in Particle Physics Instrumentation - Senior at The University of Birmingham

Field of Interest:hep-ex
Deadline: 2015-12-11
Region: Europe

Job description:
Birmingham is equipping a new large area cleanroom and associated laboratory space to accommodate the requirements of its proposed contribution to the ATLAS front-end chip hybrid flex circuit and full silicon micro-strip module assembly, along with all the stringent quality assurance needed to provide detectors suitable for at least 10 years operation under HL-LHC conditions. The scale of the proposed new facility (the Birmingham Instrumentation Laboratory for Particle physics and Applications, BILPA) is also designed to support a considerable parallel activity on other sensor technology applications and generic R&D towards novel sensor concepts. The Physics Department also hosts irradiation facilities based on its MC40 cyclotron which both supports radiation-hardness R&D and pre-production testing.

The new activity is based upon a University investment in:

  • A newly appointed Director of the Birmingham Particle Physics Silicon Sensor and Electronics Laboratory (Prof. P. Allport: from 2011-2015 ATLAS Upgrade Coordinator)
  • A rolling appointment of 3 new academic posts in support of this programme
  • Complete refurbishment of 200m2 of laboratory space.

The second new academic post is now available with immediate effect at a level dependent on the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.

The successful candidate will have a well-established international track record in the area of design and construction of particle physics instrumentation. (S)he will have several years of experience in this context and a proven ability to work with particle physics read-out systems in the context of supporting silicon detector developments in the first instance for the ATLAS upgrade tracker. (S)he should also be enthusiastic to join ongoing data analysis activities on the ATLAS Experiment at Birmingham and undertake teaching of physics at undergraduate level.
