Job description:
Applications are invited for a Research Associate in the Particle Physics Group of the School of Physics, University of Bristol.
The position is funded by the European Commission for a project to characterize conditioned nuclear waste. The University of Bristol is leading the work package on muon tomography to address the specific issue of non-destructive control of the content of large volume nuclear waste. The post is funded for 2.5 years and is available from 1st of January 2018.
Bristol has a long-standing tradition in developing detectors and data acquisition systems for particle physics. We are involved in the upgrades of CERN LHC experiments, the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE), Short baseline Oscillation search with Lithium-6 Detector (SoLid) and Mu3e. Some of our detector systems also have important applications outside of Particle Physics. Currently, we are also applying our know-how of developing detector systems to the medical, nuclear and home land security industry.
The University of Bristol is working in collaboration with 11 European institutes on the characterization of conditioned nuclear waste. The University of Bristol is leading the work package on muon tomography. For this purpose we are building a large scale, mobile demonstrator instrument in Bristol together with colleagues of the University of Sheffield and further develop our existing imaging algorithms. Initially, you play a key role in completing the commissioning of the system and then move on to improving our existing imaging algorithms. This will be done using GEANT simulations and the actual data taken with our large scale and prototype detector systems. The goal of the project is to move the system to one or more nuclear waste storage facilities outside of the UK to characterize some real, large waste containers and spent fuel casks. You will be working in a team with academics of 5 institutes and 2 PhD students.
