Job description:

The University of Hamburg is inviting applicants for a PhD student position in the field of experimental astroparticle physics.

The experimental astroparticle physics group at the University of Hamburg is engaged in the ground based gamma-ray experiments H.E.S.S., CTA, and TAIGA. The group is carrying out research in the field of dark matter, axions and cosmic-rays.

In this research project, we will develop new methods of hybrid air shower reconstruction and verify these optimized methods using data taken with the German-Russian TAIGA experiment.

We will study potential approaches to realize the next generation of ground-based detectors for gamma-ray photons between 10 and 100 TeV. The University funded position will involve the successful candidate in teaching (lab courses, exercises groups) at the level of 2 hours/week.

Applicants must have a qualifying university degree in physics. The successful candidate should have gained experience in at least one of the relevant fields (astrophysics, astroparticle physics, high energy physics) during the undergraduate studies. Additional knowledge/experience with air shower simulation, statistical data analysis methods, programming skills (python, C/C++) are desirable.

The position is remunerated at the salary level TV-L13 and calls for 50% of standard work hours per week. The fixed-term nature of this contract is based upon Section 2 of the Academic Fixed-Term Labor Contract act (WissZeitVG). The initial fixed term is three years.
