Job description:
The High Energy Physics Division at Argonne National Laboratory seeks applications from talented and highly-motivated mid-career engineers to join a multidisciplinary team of engineers, scientists and technicians in the Argonne High Energy Physics division, engaged in the design, development, and construction of electronic instrumentation for use in a broad range of research, including high energy physics, nuclear physics, photon science, and national security.
 
The successful candidate will become a member of an electronics design team involved with instrumentation design, electronics engineering, and system integration, to support the capabilities of programs within the division and Lab-wide.
 
Considerable ability in the following areas is required: 
 
·       Knowledge and experience with digital circuit operation and design; 
·       Knowledge and experience with electronic test equipment and troubleshooting techniques; 
·       Knowledge and experience with programmable logic and VHDL programming language; 
·       Knowledge and experience with modern programming languages, such as C, C++, LabView, Java, Python; 
·       Knowledge and experience with printed circuit design tools and knowledge of the PCB fabrication process; 
·       Knowledge and experience with assembly and fabrication techniques and practices; 
·       Knowledge and experience with general electrical engineering practices;
·       Knowledge and experience with the project development process from prototypes to production;  
·       Knowledge and experience in electronic component selection and working with vendors; 
·       Must have considerable written and presentation skills. 
·       Must have considerable knowledge of electrical safety and general lab safety practices. 
·       Experience in interacting with scientists is highly desirable.
 
Good ability in the following areas is desired: 
 
·       Knowledge and experience with analog circuit operation and design; 
·       Experience with large system design; 
·       Experience in managing and directing technicians and technical assistants; 
·       Skills in developing specifications and writing project documentation; 
·       Good ability to function under pressure and meet deadlines, schedules, and budgets. 
·       Must have good recognition in an instrumentation field or community. 
·       Good experience in other areas is desirable, including:  Working with embedded systems and microprocessors; 
·       Knowledge and experience in working with custom integrated circuits is desirable.
 
Education & Experience
A minimum of Bachelor’s Degree and 8+ years of experience, or Master’s Degree and 5+ years of experience, or Doctorate Degree and 4+ years of experience in electrical engineering or a related field is required.  Must be able to work effectively as part of a team.  Will be expected to interact professionally with physicists and other technical people.  Some field work may be required.  Must have physical ability to climb on large particle detectors, including working at heights. Willingness and ability to obtain a security clearance is desirable.
