Job description:
The High Energy Physics Division at Argonne National Laboratory seeks applications from talented and highly-motivated mid-career engineers to join a multidisciplinary team of engineers, scientists and technicians in the Argonne High Energy Physics division, engaged in the design, development, and construction of electronic instrumentation for use in a broad range of research, including high energy physics, nuclear physics, photon science, and national security.
 
The successful candidate is expected to bring to the division a diversity and high-level of skills in instrumentation design, electronics engineering, and system integration, to be strategically deployed to enhance and support the capabilities of programs within the division and Lab-wide.
 
The primary responsibility of the candidate will be to strengthen the electronics engineering capabilities at the laboratory, and work closely with the instrumentation development efforts within the division and the laboratory to further develop this core competency at the laboratory. The successful candidate is expected to have strong leadership skills, to grow into a leadership role for the group and the division.
 
Considerable ability in the following areas is required: 
  • Experience developing FPGA applications in Verilog or VHDL
  • Ability to integrate systems, end-to-end, in a scientific facility.
  • Experience working in a team of engineers and technicians.
  • Strong analytical skills as applied to solving engineering problems.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and experience in a culturally diverse organization.
·       Knowledge and experience with modern programming languages, such as C, C++, LabView, Java, Python
·       Knowledge and experience with  assembly and fabrication techniques and practices
·       Knowledge and experience with general electrical engineering practices
·       Knowledge and experience with the project development process from prototypes to production
·       Good ability to meet deadlines, schedules, and budgets.  Must have considerable knowledge of electrical safety and general lab safety practices.  Must have considerable experience in interacting with scientists.  Considerable experience in working with embedded systems and microprocessors is desirable. 
·       Must have considerable written and presentation skills, including the development of specifications and project documentation; Good ability to meet deadlines, schedules, and budgets. 
·       Must have considerable knowledge of electrical safety and general lab safety practices. 
·       Must have considerable experience in interacting with scientists and other technical staff. 
 
Good ability in the following areas is desired: 
 
·       Knowledge and experience with analog circuit operation and design;
·       Experience with large system design;
·       Experience in managing and directing technical staff;   
·       Must have good recognition in an instrumentation field or scientific community.
·       Good experience in other areas is desirable, including: working with embedded systems and microprocessors; Knowledge and experience in working with custom integrated circuits; Experience in working with a variety of detectors and sensors, particularly with photo-detectors; The design and analysis of optics and optical design.
