Berkeley Lab’s Accelerator Tech-Applied Physics Division has an opening for a Postdoctoral Scholar (Accelerator Tech-Applied Physics) - 84023 Organization: AF-Accelerator Tech-Applied Phys.
The Berkeley Lab Laser Accelerator (BELLA) center of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) has one or more openings for a postdoctoral researcher. The primary responsibility is to perform experimental research in the areas of intense laser-plasma interactions, radiation production, and advanced accelerators for programmatic R&D activities and projects.
The current research of the BELLA center is focused around experiments with 100, and 1000 TW-class Ti:sapphire laser systems and theory in support of the experiments. High-quality, GeV-class electron beams have been demonstrated at the laboratory over centimeter-scale acceleration distances. We are actively pursuing development of laser-plasma-based accelerators using the interaction of high-intensity, short-pulse lasers with underdense plasma, and the development of novel short-pulse THz, x-ray and gamma ray sources based on these accelerators.
What You Will Do: • Perform experimental research in the area of ultra-high intensity laser interactions with plasmas, for programmatic R&D activities and projects related to ultra-high gradient laser driven acceleration of electrons, and applications including novel radiation sources. Projects may include Thomson scattering sources of MeV photons. • Operate an ultrafast, multi-terawatt laser system, design and construct experimental hardware and control software, and execute experiments and data analysis in a safe and timely manner.
What Is Required:• Recent Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering or Physics. • Demonstrated experience in experiments on laser driven acceleration of electrons, and the building, operation and use of multi-terawatt, short pulse laser systems. • Knowledge, as demonstrated by a strong publication record, in the physics of laser-plasma interactions. • Demonstrated experience with radiation generation and detection. • Experience with various diagnostics (e.g., spectrometers, detectors, CCD cameras, etc.), ability to write small programs for data processing and experimental control (e.g. LabVIEW).
Notes:• This is a full time, 2 year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree. • Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay. • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.• Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.• This position may be subject to a background check.
