Job description:
The Theoretical Particle Physics and Cosmology Group in the Physics department at King’s College London is searching for candidates interested in applying for various long term research fellowships. These include Royal Society Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowships, Royal Society University Research Fellowships, Ernest Rutherford Fellowships (STFC), Marie Curie (EU) fellowships, Royal Astronomical Society (RAS) Daphne Jackson Fellowships and RAS Postdoctoral Fellowships.  We are also open to fellowships from the applicant’s country of origin.

Interested candidates should send a CV and basic research proposal (re-using one from another application is fine) to: kcl.tppc.fellowships@gmail.com by the internal deadlines indicated below - applicants have to go through an internal selection process for some schemes.

Royal Society Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowships, University Research Fellowships

The Royal Society offers two main schemes open to citizens of the European Economic Area or Switzerland (or those who have a relevant connection to the EEA or Switzerland - a relevant connection can be established if an individual has a PhD from a university in the EEA or Switzerland, or has worked as a research scientist in a university or research institute in the EEA or Switzerland for at least two years, or has done so before taking up an appointment outside the EEA or Switzerland).
The Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowship is for candidates who would benefit from flexible support, while University Research Fellowships are five-year fellowships (renewable for up to ten years in total). The closing deadline for the University Research Fellowship is 4th September 2017, internal KCL deadline 1st August 2017.  The deadline for the Dorothy Hodgkin has not yet been announced but is likely to be in the Autumn of 2017.

STFC Ernest Rutherford Fellowships

STFC funded Ernest Rutherford Fellowships last for five years, with up to 12 being offered annually and enable early career researchers to establish a strong, independent research programme. They will encourage talented researchers in UK universities to remain in the country and at the same time attract outstanding overseas researchers to the UK.  STFC deadline 21st September 2017, internal KCL deadline 5th August 2017.

Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions

The Marie Skłodowska-Curie scheme includes Individual Fellowships (IFs) intended to add significantly to the development of the best and most-promising researchers active in Europe. These are for trans-national researchers, including researchers coming to Europe and those moving within Europe. The deadline is 14th September 2017, internal KCL deadline 1st August 2017

Royal Astronomical Society Daphne Jackson Fellowships and Postdoctoral Fellowships.

The RAS Daphne Jackson Trust offers flexible, part-time, paid Fellowships, normally for two years, to assist talented scientists into a career following a break of at least two years. Applications are accepted year round.
RAS postdoctoral Fellowships provide support for up to 3 years for early career research astronomers and geophysicists. Applications are restricted to candidates who have a recognized PhD (or equivalent) obtained no more than 5 years before the start of their position or who have taken their viva before the application deadline and expect to be awarded the PhD by the time of appointment.  The deadline for 2017 has not yet been announced, but is likely to be in October.

The Physics Department (Head: Professor Peter Main) is located on the Strand Campus of King’s College London, along the banks of the River Thames in the heart of London. It is large enough to be well above the critical mass for an internationally competitive physics department but small enough to retain a friendliness and collegial mentality.
It is a warm, friendly department, with an inclusive culture and excellent relations between staff and students, who report high levels of satisfaction and have excellent employment prospects. We are fortunate to have high quality staff from all over the world, France, Germany, Italy, USA, Russia, Greece, Spain and many more. The diversity of our staff is something we celebrate along with the diversity of our students, who also come from a broad range of backgrounds. We are also fortunate in having a gender ratio amongst our students which has 50% higher ratio of women than the national average.
Diversity is positively encouraged with a number of family-friendly policies, including the operation of a core-hours policy, the right to flexible working and to a reduced workload following periods of extended absence, for example maternity leave. We offer high levels of support for disabled students and staff. There are regular social events and the Departmental ethos is that we support each other and work as a team.
