Job description:
Postdoctoral Researcher - 83716
Organization: PH-Physics
Berkeley Lab (LBNL) addresses the world’s most urgent scientific challenges by advancing sustainable energy, protecting human health, creating new materials, and revealing the origin and fate of the universe. Founded in 1931, Berkeley Lab’s scientific expertise has been recognized with 13 Nobel prizes. The University of California manages Berkeley Lab for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science.
Position Summary:
Berkeley Lab’s Physics Division has an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher. You will experiment on particle physics to work on Silicon detector instrumentation development, prototyping and construction for the High Luminosity upgrade to the ATLAS experiment.
What You Will Do:
• Collaborate with LBNL engineers and physicists on the design, prototyping, and measurement of state of the art silicon tracking detector hardware. The areas of work will be selected from the following: detector design and simulation, detector module/chip design and test, electrical test hardware and firmware, and advanced carbon composite support and cooling structures with integrated electronics.
• Task may involve detector simulation, operation of prototype modules using custom hardware and software, test beam measurements, irradiations, as well as production of prototype and final detector components. The production will involve serial production test methods and equipment, electro-mechanical assemblies, and vertical slice system tests.
• Effectively collaborate locally with students and visitors as well as LBNL staff, and remotely with other ATLAS institutes working on the silicon tracker upgrade.
Additional Responsibilities as needed:
• May also participate in activities to evaluate the physics performance of the hardware being developed. The work will be carried out in the context of the ATLAS collaboration; the researcher will be exposed to ATLAS experimental physics program and will be a full member of the collaboration.
What Is Required:
• Ph.D. in Experimental Physics, Applied Physics or Engineering.
• Experience with High Energy Physics or Nuclear Science Detector development, construction, commissioning, or operation.
• Proficiency with computing programming languages (eg. C/C++, python)
Additional Desired Qualifications:
• Experience in integrated circuit design or test, firmware programming experience (eg.
• VHDL, Verilog), finite element analysis, precision assembly and metrology, electronic assembly and wire bonding, electronic reliability testing, radiation testing, GEANT simulation and familiarity with ROOT.
The posting shall remain open until the position is filled, however for full consideration, please apply by close of business on June 30, 2017.
Notes:
• This is a full time, 2 year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years paid postdoctoral experience.
• Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
• This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
• Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.
• This position is contingent on the successful completion of a background check.
• Work will be primarily performed at: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
