Job description:
Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics at the University of Manchester is looking for excellent students to fill newly-available PhD studentship positions in Astrophysics and Astronomy as part of a new Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Data Intensive Science, to start in October 2017. These fully-funded PhD studentships would be 4 years length.
The Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics is one of the UK's largest astronomy research groups and our work covers a range of data intensive areas, from signal and image processing to statistical inference, machine learning and computational modelling. The research programme includes observational and theoretical studies covering almost the whole of modern astrophysics: from the discovery of planets orbiting other stars, to the origin of the universe in the Big Bang. The group is also a world leader in radio-astronomy-related technology development for ground and space-based instruments. These CDT studentships will also include a short multi-disciplinary secondment to an industry or third sector partner engaged in the development of or use of data intensive science techniques.
These positions are open to nationals from any country (subject to visa conditions).
Candidates should have or expect to obtain either a minimum of a II:1 class UK Masters honours degree or international equivalent, or a first degree with an additional Masters degree or international equivalent.
Interested applicants please contact the CDT coordinator Dr. Anna Scaife (anna.scaife@manchester.ac.uk) in the first instance, quoting their interest in applying for a PhD studentship in Data Intensive Astrophysics, and additionally apply through the University of Manchester postgraduate application system:
