Job description:
The Cosmology, Particle Astrophysics and String Theory Group at the Stockholm University invites applications for a PhD position in Astroparticle Physics. The successful candidate will join the research group led by Prof. Jan Conrad, working under the supervision of Dr. Alfredo D. Ferella on the XENON1T, XENONnT and DARWIN experiments.
XENON1T is Currently the most sensitive WIMP dark matter direct detection experiments in operation and represents the state of the art of dual-phase liquid xenon based Time Projection Chambers employed for the direct detection of WIMPs.
The collaboration envisions a quick scale-up, dubbed XENONnT, that will reach a sensitivity to the reference spin-independent WIMP-nucleon cross section of about two orders of magnitude better than the current limits.
The successful candidate will work on the data analysis of XENON1T and XENONnT, collaborating with our group in the development of advanced analysis tools. Moreover she/he will work on an R&D program for the test and characterization of photo-sensors in liquid xenon to possibly identify an alternative to the currently used type of photo-sensors. The PhD programme aims at giving the student a broad perspective of dark matter direct detection and experimental methods, covering aspects that range from statistical inference and treatment of low-background experiments’ data, phenomenology of particle dark matter detection, to detector and photo-sensor development
