Description
The Fermilab Particle Physics Division seeks highly motivated application physicist candidates to join its Electrical Engineering Department. The selected candidate will be assigned to the ASIC Test Group within the Electrical Engineering Department.
 
The selected candidate will be expected to work closely with ASIC engineers, attend meetings, participate in ASIC design architecture decisions, as well as developing a deep understanding of the full functionality of ASICs which are being designed. The majority of the ASICs are developed for the operation of experimental detectors for high-energy physics, basic sciences and particle astrophysics research. Under the supervision of more experienced physicists and engineers, the candidate will participate in efforts involving the development of ASIC test procedures, guide and participate in general electrical design, FPGA programming, printed circuit board schematic design and LabView programming.

Responsibilities
  • Development of a thorough understanding of the ASICs under development and aiding in the production of test plans
  • Performing or leading engineering tasks necessary from the design stages through the review, procurement, manufacture, integration, testing, and operation of ASICs and/or the front end electronics boards the ASICs are used on
  • Documentation of ASIC/electronics test procedures and test systems.
 
Qualifications and Essential Job Functions
  • PhD in Physics with a minimum of 4-6 years working with electronics, or another related Engineering field from an accredited institution.
  • Knowledge of electrical design – digital and analog.
  • Ability to use a computer to program and develop software tools.
  • Ability to use a computer to develop FPGA firmware.
  • Ability to draw and read electrical schematics.
  • Ability to use a computer for performing engineering analysis, writing reports, and creating presentations.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
