Job description:
Doctoral Positions in Experimental Particle Physics within the LHCb group of Physikalisches Institut, Heidelberg University

Our group currently consists of 15 senior scientists and about 25 students. In the past, we made major contributions to the construction and installation of the forward tracking system of the LHCb experiment. We have major responsibilities in the operation of the forward tracking system and for the according pattern recognition software. The Heidelberg LHCb group has a wide range of analysis interests and contributed to many publications in the area of electroweak penguin decays, analysis of semileptonic decays, hadron spectroscopy and searches for other exotica.

The LHCb experiment will upgrade major parts of the detector by 2020, to run at higher luminosities. The Heidelberg group has taken a leading role in the design and the construction of the upgraded main tracker based on scintillating fibres, which are read out by silicon photo-multipliers. Our group is involved in the development and the construction of the fiber tracker modules as well as in the development of readout electronics and we contribute at various levels to the organisation of the project. In addition the group works on the tracking software for the upgraded detector and develops filter algorithms for the high-level trigger. Our work is supported by several engineers and technicians in our mechanical and electronic workshops. As a spin-off of these activities, we are in parallel developing a scintillating fiber based beam monitor in close cooperation with the Heidelberg Ion Therapy Center.

Successful applicants are expected to make significant contributions to either our software activities in pattern recognition or to our hardware activities for the LHCb scintillating fiber tracker or the beam monitor project and to one of our analysis topics. These positions are embedded within a structured doctoral programme as part of one of the both Research Training Groups of the German Research Foundation (DFG) "Particle Physics Beyond the Standard Model", "High Rate and High Resolution Detectors in Nuclear and Particle Physics".

Applicants must have a master degree in experimental particle physics or in a related field with relevant experience. Applications including CV, a research statement and two letter of references should be sent to

The positions are open till they are filled. Applications which are received before 18th of April 2017 get our full attention. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Heidelberg University is an equal opportunity employer and welcomes applications from women. Handicapped applicants will be preferentially treated, if equally qualified.
