Job description:
The Max Planck Institute for Physics invites applications for a

Postdoctoral position

focused on R&D in connection with a new Axion Dark Matter search experiment, MADMAX.

Axions are prime candidates to explain the Dark Matter problem of the universe. Their existence is independently predicted by Peccei Quinn (PQ) symmetry breaking to explain the strong CP problem.

MADMAX is a new experimental approach to search for Dark Matter axions with a mass around 100μeV, a mass range favoured by a class of theoretical models. The new approach makes use of the idea of a magnetized dish in connection with dielectric layers that boost the axion to photon conversion to a detectable rate.

The successful candidate is expected to take over a leading role in the design, development and implementation of important parts of the experimental infrastructure, such as the dielectric haloscope and the radiometer.

Formal requirements for this position are a PhD in experimental physics. The candidate should have a background in (astro-)particle physics or experimental cosmology. Experience in signal processing, EM simulations, cryogenics and vacuum technology and a good knowledge in programming with C++, Root and GEANT 4 are an advantage.

Salary and benefits are commensurate with public service organizations (TVöD Bund). The contract is initially limited to 2 years with the possibility of an extension. The Max Planck Society is an equal opportunity employer. The goal is to enhance the percentage of women where they are underrepresented. Women, therefore, are especially encouraged to apply. The Society is committed to employing more people with special needs. Applications of people with special needs are particularly welcome.

Further information can be obtained from Dr. Béla Majorovits (E-Mail: bela@mppmu.mpg.de). The call is open until the position is filled. Interested applicants should submit an application letter, a statement of research interests, a curriculum vitae,
a list of publications, and arrange for three letters of support to be sent to
