The Department of Physics at the Arizona State University (https://physics.asu.edu/) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor appointment in Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics with an anticipated start date of August 2017. Arizona State University is seeking to grow a vibrant group of theorists who will develop cutting-edge methods for the modeling of condensed matter systems and collaborate with the many existing experimental groups across the campus (e.g., synthesis of low-dimensional materials, magnetic materials, novel semiconductors, self-assembled materials, and new energy materials). ASU has one of the most extensive arrays of experimental characterization facilities worldwide, ranging from optical to nuclear methods. Facilities include the ASU High-Performance Computing Facility, the John Cowley Center for High-Resolution Electron Microscopy, the LeRoy Eyring Center for Solid State Science, and the soon-to-be-completed ASU Compact X-ray Free-Electron Laser.
We are particularly interested in applicants who are developing new theoretical approaches in condensed matter physics, broadly defined. Areas can include quantum statistics, many-body methods, statistical mechanics, low-dimensional and topological materials, and the discovery of new materials using theoretical methods.
The successful candidate will be expected to develop a vigorous, externally-funded research program in condensed matter theory, engage undergraduate and graduate students through effective teaching, participate in service to the university and the profession, and build productive relationships with faculty within the Department of Physics and across the ASU campus. The candidate will join a dynamic faculty working to advance innovative research and excellence in teaching through its work with the diverse and growing undergraduate and graduate student population at Arizona State University.
Minimum qualifications include: a Ph.D. (or equivalent degree) in physical or mathematical sciences by start of appointment, demonstrated ability to establish a strong, independent, externally-funded research program and potential for leadership in their subfield, and a strong commitment to excellence in teaching.
Desired qualifications include: a strong record of research accomplishments, evidence of successful postdoctoral experience, a research focus in theory-experiment synergy, and demonstrated success meeting the needs of diverse student populations and/or reaching out to diverse communities.
