Job description:
Postdoctoral Research Associate/Physics-RHIC Spin
Brookhaven National Laboratory is a multipurpose research institution funded primarily by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. Located on the center of Long Island, New York, Brookhaven Lab brings world-class facilities and expertise to the most exciting and important questions in basic and applied science—from the birth of our universe to the sustainable energy technology of tomorrow. We operate cutting-edge large-scale facilities for studies in physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, applied science, and a wide range of advanced technologies. The Laboratory's almost 3,000 scientists, engineers, and support staff are joined each year by more than 4,000 visiting researchers from around the world. Our award-winning history, including seven Nobel Prizes, stretches back to 1947, and we continue to unravel mysteries from the nanoscale to the cosmic scale, and everything in between. Brookhaven is operated and managed by Brookhaven Science Associates, which was founded by the Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University, and Battelle, a nonprofit applied science and technology organization.Organizational Overview
Organization Overview:
The Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory is the world's only machine capable of colliding high-energy beams of polarized protons, and is a unique tool for exploring the puzzle of the proton's 'missing' spin. Members of the RHIC spin group are playing key roles in detector development and analysis of the polarized proton-proton data in both the PHENIX and STAR collaborations at RHIC. The other major involvement of the RHIC spin group is in the RHIC polarimeters, which provide the measurement of the polarization of the proton beams at RHIC.
Position Description
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
As a member of the group, the successful candidate will be part of the STAR collaborations and work on analysis of the polarized proton-proton data. In addition, the candidate will be expected to spend a significant fraction of his/her time on the operation of the RHIC polarimeters and/or the analysis of their data. For further detail on the position, please contact Dr. E.C. Aschenauer (elke@bnl.gov), Physics Department.
Position Requirements
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Ph.D. in Nuclear or Particle physics.
- Understanding of software development paradigms.
- Strong background in programming is required.
- Good communication skills to collaborate with a broad international community in STAR
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Experience in physics studied proton-proton scattering.
- Knowledge in C++ programming and ROOT would be valuable but is not required.
- Experience on the concept of polarization measurements
- BNL policy states that Research Associate appointments may be made to those who have received their doctoral degrees within the past five years.
- Requires travel, including foreign travel.
Environmental, Health, and Safety Considerations:
