Job description:

Department of Physics at Chalmers
The ambition of the department of Physics is to foster a creative environment for academic research, learning and outreach. We address a wide array of experimental, computational, methodological and theoretical challenges, from fundamental physics research, through the development of new materials such as graphene to direct industrial projects generating new inventions. We have a strong learning commitment on all levels from undergraduate to PhD studies where physics meet engineering.

The department is a major part of Gothenburg Physics Centre – a collaboration between four departments at Chalmers and Gothenburg University.

Information about the Theoretical physics division
The Theoretical Physics division is engaged in both applied and fundamental research. Our research covers areas such as quantum field theory, string theory and gravity, complex systems, plasma physics, physics of strong fields, and classical field theory. We use advanced analytical and numerical tools in our research, and the research areas are united by the methods. Our common goal: to understand nature.

Major responsibilities
Your major responsibility as a postdoc is to perform your own research in a research group. The research is in string theory/M-theory, and presumably in an area in or related to double field theory, exceptional field theory, duality symmetries, extended supersymmetry.

The position may also include teaching on undergraduate and master's levels as well as supervising master and/or PhD students to a certain extent. Another important aspect involves collaboration within academia and with society at large (e.g. through popular presentations). The position is meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry/the public sector.

Position summary
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of two years (1+1). No tenure.

Qualifications
To qualify for the position of postdoc, you must have a doctoral degree in a relevant field; the degree should generally not be older than three years. You are expected to be somewhat accustomed to teaching, and to demonstrate very high potential within research.

Your PhD should be in theoretical physics or mathematics. In the selection process, emphasis is put on the publication record in string theory, and especially in the above mentioned areas.

If your PhD is older than three years, the position may be converted into a position as researcher, with the same responsibilities.

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. If Swedish is not your native language, we encourage you to attend Swedish courses, offered by Chalmers, with the goal of being able to teach in Swedish on undergraduate level after two years.

Chalmers continuously strives to be an attractive employer. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all activities at Chalmers.
