Job description:

Electronics Engineer in the Physics Department (PH), Electronic Systems to Experiments group (ESE).

You will join the Electronic Systems for Experiments Group (ESE) of the Physics Department (PH), which designs electronic systems, including ASICs, for the experiments at CERN and also supplies a series of electronics related services. The Microelectronics section (ME) develops analogue and digital integrated circuits for the readout and control of the CERN experiments. You will act in a CMOS technology support role for the ASIC designers inside and outside CERN. You will be expected to keep up with the latest technologies in use in the HEP community by participating in leading edge design projects. You will coach and supervise less experienced designers.

Functions

As an Electronics engineer in the Microelectronics section of the ESE group, you will work on developing design kits for EDA tools and providing support to ASIC designers inside and outside of CERN. In particular your work will require the following:

• Installation and support of process technology design kits (PDKs) for various technologies across multiple foundries.
• Architect and Develop automation of flows as needed with emphasis to digital back-end implementation flows based on Cadence Encounter.
• Work with external design support centres and EDA vendors to develop Mixed Signal Design kits and reference workflows to ensure standardisation of design environments creating re-use capabilities.
• EDA tools evaluations, deployment, training, and technical support - Bug and issue tracking related to design automation.
• Provide prompt advice and recommendations to CERN designers as well as to CERN collaborating institutes designers when they encounter issues while using the design workflows.
• Creation of relevant documentation and development of information sharing mechanisms.
• Maintenance of hard IP blocks with technical completeness and documentation.
• In order to maintain an up-to-date expertise in the latest technologies, you will be expected to participate as a member of a design team on a number of leading edge projects.

Qualification required

Master degree or Ph.D. in the field of electronics engineering with a specialization in microelectronics design, or equivalent.

Experience and competencies

The experience required for this post is:

• Demonstrated experience in the fields of design and development of microelectronics circuits.
• Experience with at least one modern CMOS process and its application to low power, high speed ASIC design.
• Extensive experience with the use of EDA tools for mixed mode microelectronics design: analog simulation, compact layout, extraction and re-simulation, HDL simulation and synthesis for digital circuitry.
• Deep knowledge of modern back-end tools as well as Verilog RTL programming.
• Experience on the design of analog and mixed-mode circuits of high energy physics experiments will be an asset.

The technical competencies required for this post are:

• Digital microelectronic circuit design: modelling and simulation.
• Digital circuit testing and measurement techniques.
• Good understanding of digital communications principles and
• Use of high level electronics system description languages, techniques and tools.

The behavioural competencies required for this post are:

• Working in teams: understanding when teamwork is required to achieve the best results; including others accordingly and sharing information.
• Achieving results: having a structured and organised approach towards work; being able to set priorities and plan tasks with results in mind.
• Demonstrating flexibility: adapting quickly and resourcefully to shifting priorities and requirements.
• Communicating effectively: checking to ensure that the message has been well understood; ensuring that information, procedures and decisions are appropriately documented.
• Learning and sharing knowledge: sharing knowledge and expertise freely and willingly with others; coaching others to ensure knowledge transfer.

The language competencies required are:

• English: spoken and written with the ability to draw up technical texts. The ability to understand and speak French in professional contexts would be an advantage.
