Job description:

The Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab), located in Newport News, VA, USA, is a world-class scientific laboratory centered around a high-intensity, continuous wave electron beam that provides a unique capability for nuclear physics research. The lab is managed for the Department of Energy by Jefferson Science Associates.

Jefferson Lab seeks to fill the position of Staff Scientist I in electromagnetic nuclear physics in the combined experimental Hall A/C group. The recently completed upgrade of the Jefferson Lab beam energy from 6 to 12 GeV is in first physics phase. In experimental Hall A, base equipment from the 6 GeV era is currently being utilized and an ambitious combination of future large installation experiments and multiple experimental configurations is planned. A vigorous scientific program is foreseen for  Hall C using the existing 6 GeV era HMS spectrometer in combination with the newly constructed SuperHMS, the latter to be commissioned this year. The initial physics program of the Halls includes studies of generalized and transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions of the nucleon, detailed measurements of nucleon valence quark structure at large x, and studies of fundamental properties of atomic nuclei. Major pieces of equipment include tracking chambers, calorimeters, and gas and aerogel Cherenkov counters, centered around large resistive and superconducting magnetic spectrometer systems.

The new Staff Scientist will assume a growing and flexible leading role in the construction and/or operation of multiple Hall subsystems. This individual will share the responsibility for execution of the experimental physics program in both Halls A and C with the combined Hall A/C staff and external user community, providing hardware and software support of the Hall A/C instrumentation. Hall staff scientists are expected to be actively engaged in aspects of the Jefferson Lab scientific program.

Position Requirements

A Ph.D. in experimental nuclear or particle physics with postdoctoral experience in nuclear or a related particle physics environment is required. Expertise in the fabrication, assembly and operation of large complex detector systems, in the implementation of the accompanying data acquisition systems, and/or in significant software development for or simulation of same is preferred. The successful candidate should, moreover, have demonstrated expertise in at least one research area of current interest in nuclear physics and optimally the ability to conceive original experiments with electromagnetic probes. Strong communication skills are a positive for interaction with a large and diverse international user community.

Applicants should attach curriculum vitae and arrange to have at least two reference letters emailed to Erica Jones (eljones@jlab.org)
