The EU-funded Horizon 2020 programme has two main strategic objectives: to strengthen the scientific and technological base of European industry and to encourage its international competitiveness, while promoting research that supports EU policies.
AMVA4NewPhysics is a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network comprising European institutions that will foster the development and exploitation of Advanced Multi-Variate Analysis (AMVA) for New Physics searches. The Network will offer extensive training in both physics and advanced analysis techniques to graduate students, focusing on providing them with the know-how and the experience to boost their career prospects in and outside academia. AMVA4NewPhysics will develop ties with non-academic partners for the creation of interdisciplinary software tools, allowing a successful knowledge transfer in both directions. The Network will study innovative techniques and identify their suitability to problems encountered in searches for new physics at the LHC and detailed studies of the Higgs boson sector.
AMVA4NewPhysics is being led by INFN Padova in Italy. For its research posts, AMVA4NewPhysics is recruiting 10 Early Stage Researchers (ESRs) for employment by the network partners in Belgium, France, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.
The challenge
CERN is recruiting one ESR to work for two years on Higgs physics with modern statistical learning tools. The main goal is an improved classification of Higgs production in association with top quarks via the matrix element method.
The successful candidate will contribute to the development of new matrix element tools and to the analysis of ATLAS data using proton-proton collisions at 13 TeV produced by the LHC collider at CERN.

You will be offered a CERN employment contract for 2 years whilst working towards your Phd in the ATLAS experiment at LHC.

The successful candidate at CERN will have three one-month visits to members of the network (the physics departments of LIP, Lisbon, andUCL, Louvain-La-Neuve, and the Institute for Mathematics for Analysis and Applications, EPFL, Lausanne). In addition, he/she will be trained on the development of supervised training software in a three-month secondment at the industrial partner B12-Consulting, Louvain-La-Neuve.
ESRs must, at the time of recruitment
- (i) be in possession of a university degree, and (ii) have a maximum of four years of full-time research experience, including any period of research training, after obtaining the degree which formally allowed them to embark on a doctorate in the country in which the degree/diploma was obtained or in the host country (irrespective of whether or not a doctorate was envisaged).
- Applicants may be on a PhD programme but cannot be PhD holders at the start of their employment contract.
- The position is open to applicants of all nationalities provided that the European Commission's Mobility Rule is satisfied: "At the time of recruitment by the host organisation, researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc) in the country of their host organisation for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the reference date. Short stays such as holidays and/or compulsory national service are not taken into account." In the case of CERN positions, applicants cannot have been at CERN for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the reference date.
- Proficiency in English is required; training in other languages can be provided through the ITN's training budget.

- Attractive remuneration under employment contract for 24 months.
- In accordance with the European Commission's allowances for ITNs, there is an additional training allowance to cover training activities, conference attendance, etc.
- Employment contracts will commence in the Fall of 2016, following the candidate selection and completion of formal administrative procedures.
- Interviews will be held as soon as possible after the closing date and will include at least a video interview. In the event of an interview at CERN, AMVA4NewPhysics will cover travel costs.
