Description

The Detector Development and Operation Department (DDOD) in the Fermilab Particle Physics Division seeks an outstanding candidate for an Associate Scientist position. The successful candidate will join the Silicon Detector Facility and is expected to lead particle detector development, construction and operation and to participate in physics analysis for the CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland. The candidate is also expected to facilitate the utilization of Silicon Detector Facility resources in support of the Fermilab scientific program. The position is for an initial period of up to five years followed by an opportunity for an indefinite appointment as a scientist.

Responsibilities will include:
  • Taking a leading role in the CMS upgrade project to design and construct replacements for components of the current detector.
  • Joining and expanding the existing detector R&D activities of the silicon detector facility.
  • Publishing scientific papers on CMS analysis of LHC data.
  • Presenting work to scientific collaborations, conferences, workshops, and reviews.
 
 
Qualifications and Essential Job Functions
  • Ph.D. in Physics.
  • 4 or more years post-doctoral experience in high energy physics experiments at hadron colliders.
  • Demonstrated ability to carry out independent research and project leadership.
  • Established ability to plan, conduct and lead development of particle detectors for tracking and calorimetry.
  • Demonstrated record of experience in development and testing of silicon detectors.
  • Demonstrated record of experience and publications in hadron collider detector development and data analysis.
  • Excellent communication skills including making presentations to large international scientific collaborations and conferences.
