Job description:
Applications are invited for a five year fixed term Researcher position in Theoretical Physics in the Gauteng Node of the National Institute for Theoretical Physics (NITheP), which is based in the School of Physics, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. This position carries the same rank and salary as that of a full time academic Lecturer. Renewal for an additional five year term is possible based on performance in the post and subject to the availability of funding at the time.

Research areas of the Associates of the NITheP based at the University of the Witwatersrand include theoretical aspects of condensed matter physics, cosmology, mathematical physics, particle phenomenology and string theory. The School of Physics also has research groups in astronomy and astrophysics, experimental condensed matter physics, experimental high energy physics (in particular, the ATLAS collaboration), and nuclear physics.

Qualifications: Minimum qualifications are a PhD and evidence of an independent post-doctoral research profile.

Selection: Applicants in any area of theoretical physics will be considered. Final selection will be made on the basis of scholarship and potential to strengthen, complement or bridge current areas of research in the School.

Duties: The applicant is expected to lead an independent research program that may involve postgraduate students and postdoctoral research associates. The Gauteng node of NITheP maintains two postdoctoral research associate positions, and the Researcher will contribute to their selection. The Mandelstam Institute for Theoretical Physics (MITP), an institute of the University of the Witwatersrand, currently has an additional six postdoctoral research positions. The Researcher will additionally bear light administrative duties associated with NITheP regional programmes. Undergraduate teaching duties in the School of Physics are strictly voluntary.
