Description
Under minimal supervision, plans and conducts the effort of various groups, major phase(s) of engineering, accelerator/systems operation, project/program of Departmental or Divisional scope/impact, utilizing an external knowledge of physics, together with management, problem-solving skills and an understanding of engineering. Leads the design of components, processes, and systems with a proficiency in the use of some of the following: modern analytical tools, software and hardware development, integration and testing, design of microelectronic circuitry, and the physics principles needed to analyze materials used in modern scientific, chemical, and mechanical and/or electrical engineering applications; or facilitates an operation that routinely requires understanding and application of the above designs.
Responsible for the overall coordination and operation of accelerator activities in the Heavy Assembly Building (HAB) at the Illinois Accelerator Research Center (IARC). This includes oversight of the assembly of enclosures, assembly and operation of accelerator systems and structures, assisting with the technical needs of IARC partners. Serve as the technical lead for a technical team assembling and operating accelerator systems and components. May supervise and/or direct the work of technicians and support staff in an experimental or operational function as required. Coordinate operation and maintenance of HAB technical systems such as water, electrical, vacuum, cryogenics, clean rooms, etc. May perform all or some of the duties described above or direct others who carry out these tasks.
Uses problem-solving skills and an understanding of mechanical and electrical engineering, leads the design, assembly, and operation of components, processes, and systems with a proficiency of some of the following: modern analytical tools, software and hardware development, instrumentation, integration and testing, microelectronic circuitry, microwave and RF power, and the physics principles needed in modern scientific, chemical, mechanical and electrical engineering applications.

Essential Job Functions
· Establishes and enforces standards for safe HAB operation(s) including meeting applicable Fermilab ES&H Manual Chapters, OSHA standards, Fermilab Radiological Control Manual Chapters, and D.O.E. Orders, standards and appropriate criteria.
· Diagnoses and troubleshoots problems; makes independent judgments as to the best course of action to correct the issue; fabricates equipment and or develops procedures and schedules repairs as necessary to enable the continued operation of the area of assignment.
· Maintains and analyzes operational performance, reliability and maintenance statistics for operating accelerators and component systems and subsystems; makes recommendations for improvements to management.
· Is flexible and creative in responding to unforeseen challenges that arise in the development of unique technical systems.
· Responsible for efficient and safe operation, installation, maintenance, fabrication, assembly and repair efforts for accelerator or experiment and facilities and subsystems including conducting hazard analysis and equipment testing and inspection.
· Responsible for the operation or the construction of a system such as a beam line, accelerator system, or a detector as needed.
· Responsible for meeting project milestones, scheduled completion dates and coordinating commissioning activities.
· Provides direction in new or emerging areas of technology and future facility and equipment needs and interacts with IARC Director or designees to coordinate resources needed.
· Serve as liaison to coordinate work activities at the HAB performed by groups from both inside and outside Fermilab. These workers include those from other Fermilab Divisions and Sections as well as workers from outside contractors, universities, partner companies or other collaborating partners.
· Monitors tests and examines operations of facilities to isolate and define problems with proper functioning of equipment insuring efficient functioning and conformance with Safety specifications and regulations.
· Operates facilities or complex equipment to perform data collection and tests, planning and directing inquiries to discover facts, detect trends or to test hypotheses concerning the equipment or system.
· Leads efforts to analyze and evaluate findings to develop improvements to existing systems and explores the utilization of new techniques to increase future efficiency.
· Recommends purchases of technical equipment in support of assigned activities.
· Operates or supervise HAB crane use as required. Insures lifting equipment is available, appropriate, maintained, and used properly.
· Determines vendors and technologies for performance evaluation.
· Develops written operation and maintenance procedures and practices in collaboration with other staff members.
· Trains, directs and assists technical personnel in the area of assignment.
· Works closely with the AD building manager assigned to the IARC complex to effective resolve IARC building or infrastructure issues.
· Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
· BS or higher degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, RF Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related fields preferred.
· Minimum of 5 years’ experience in Accelerator/Machine Operations and/or Management.
