Job description:
Our group currently consists of 12 senior scientists and about 20 students. In the past, we made major contributions to the forward tracking system of LHCb. We share the responsibility of the operation of the tracking system and are playing a leading role in track reconstruction. In parallel, the Heidelberg LHCb group has a wide range of analysis interests including electroweak penguin decays, CP violation in the beauty and charm sector and recently as well spectroscopy.

The LHCb experiment plans to upgrade major parts of the detector by 2019, to run at higher luminosities. The Heidelberg group has taken a leading role in the design and the construction of the upgraded main tracker (12 layers x 5m x 6m). The new main tracker is based on scintillating fibers, which are read out by silicon photo-multipliers. Our group is involved in the development and the construction of the fiber tracker modules as well as in the readout electronics and we contribute at various levels to the organization of the project. In addition the group works on the tracking software for the upgraded detector. Our work is supported by several engineers and technicians in our mechanical and electronic workshops.

Successful applicants are expected to contribute in a leading role to our hardware activities. The position is initially for two years and is based in Heidelberg. Frequent travels to other participating institutes and to CERN are expected.

Applicants must have a PhD degree in experimental particle physics or in a related field with relevant experience. Experience in hardware is mandatory. Applications including CV, list of publications and a statement of research interest should be send to:

Prof. Ulrich Uwer
