Deadline: 2016-04-15
Region: North America

Job description:

The group of Prof. Daniel Tapia Takaki at the University of Kansas invites applications from prospective PhD students that are interested in performing research for the CMS Collaboration. Prof Tapia Takaki group focuses on high energy nuclear physics.

This is an exciting time to study high energy nuclear physics. Although about 98% of hadronic matter is due to gluons, little is known about gluons and their properties. Prof Tapia Takaki’s experiments on quarkonia photo-nuclear production at CERN have provided the first experimental evidence that the nuclear gluon density is below that expected for a simple superposition of protons and neutrons in the Pb nuclei.

Novel studies of di-jets and di-photons in photo-nuclear production to study the nuclear gluon density can be carried out by the PhD student. The study of exotic states produced in photon-nuclear reactions at high energies are also possible. The group is in close contact with theorists.

Prior experience working in nuclear and particle physics is desired but not a prerequisite

We are seeking a talented and ambitious PhD candidate. The student is expected to spend a large fraction of his/her PhD program at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland.

Apart from research, PhD students will contribute to the operation of the CMS experiment. Students have also the possibility to contribute to the CMS BRIL project: Beam Radiation Instrumentation and Luminosity.

All applications should include a curriculum vitae, information on previous education, and two reference letters in support of the application.

The position may begin in Summer or Fall 2016.

For further information, please contact Prof. Tapia Takaki directly.
