Job description:
The ESRF is a multinational research institute, situated in Grenoble, France and financed by 21 countries mostly European. It operates a powerful synchrotron X-ray source with some 30 beamlines (instruments) covering a wide range of scientific research in fields such as biology and medicine, chemistry, earth and environmental sciences, materials and surface science, and physics. The ESRF employs about 600 staff and is organized as a French société civile.
Within the Experiments Division, the Matter at Extremes group is now seeking to recruit a:
PhD Thesis Student
Subject: Structure and dynamics of simple molecular liquids at high pressure
Fixed-term contract
GENERAL FRAMEWORK
Liquids constitute a dense disordered phase of matter, hence their physical properties are controlled by interaction at the atomic scale. A coherent picture of the liquid state at ambient pressure emerged only three decades ago. A great diversity of liquids has been observed, from simple liquids, colloids to liquid crystals due to the competition between intra and inter-molecular interactions. However, the behaviour of the liquid state at ambient pressure cannot be simply extrapolated at high pressure. High pressure breaks the molecular bonds, ionizes molecules and transforms insulators into metals. Hence, by varying pressure, molecular interactions can be dramatically affected and liquid states of higher structural complexity can emerge.
DESCRIPTION OF THE THESIS OF WORK
The aim of this thesis is to perform state-of-the-art structural and dynamical measurements over a wide range of pressure and temperature in three elemental liquids: sodium, sulphur and chlorine. These three fluids have been selected because fundamental pressure-induced modifications, such as insulator-to-metal, molecular-to-polymeric, molecular-to-ionic or hybridization of valence-core electrons, are expected. Two powerful in situ experimental probes will be available: X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. Inelastic X-ray scattering and X-ray absorption spectroscopy could also be performed on other ESRF beamlines. The experimental results will be complemented by theoretical investigations using state-of-the-art ab initio molecular dynamics.
