Experiments:Quantum gas experiments including two or more atomic elements, since the present experiment involves the added complication of working with both rubidium and potassium gases.
Deadline: 2016-02-13
Region: North America
Job description:
Members of the Physics Department at the University of California, Berkeley, invite applications for an Associate Specialist in experimental ultracold atomic physics, at 100% time (full-time) with an anticipated start date in spring 2016. The researcher is expected to conduct research in specialized areas: experiments on ultracold rubidium and potassium atoms trapped within optical lattices, targeting topics in matter-wave optics and quantum magnetism. Develop and maintain a two-species quantum gas experiment, involving expertise in laser physics, low-noise electronics, low-noise photodetection, imaging and data analysis, and ultrahigh vacuum systems. Conduct leading-edge research, including studies of matter-wave optics in superlattice potentials, novel approaches to imaging, and computational imaging as applied to quantum gas research, and experiments revealing the effect of geometric frustration in bosonic and fermionic gases. The position is for one-year with the possibility of extension. Further extensions beyond this may be possible, subject to availability of funds.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to interact and work with members of the Physics Department at Berkeley and with the Materials Sciences Division at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, particularly with Professor Dan Stamper-Kurn.
Salary for this full-time position will commensurate with experience.
Basic Qualifications:
BS/BA or equivalent degree required. Experience in the areas of atomic physics and quantum optics by the time of application.
Additional Qualifications:
Publication in peer-reviewed journals by start date.
Preferred Qualifications:
We are looking for individuals with experience in quantum gas experiments including two or more atomic elements, since the present experiment involves the added complication of working with both rubidium and potassium gases. Strong record of research publications in peer-reviewed journals. Ph.D. (or equivalent) degree in atomic physics or quantum optics.
